The mission of TISS is to link research institutions, NGOs, and private distributers to increase the availability of affordable, appropriate technology to the Base of the Pyramid (BOP). TISS aims to bridge the divide between research and practice, providing technical assistance and training to NGOs, with a focus on supply chain development, social marketing and impact assessment. In this role, TISS seeks to act as a catalyst, enabling rapid scale up of projects, and dramatically increasing access to technologies that have the potential to improve the quality of life and create employment in places affected by poverty and conflict. By maintaining close relationships with both researchers and NGOs, TISS works to ensure that R&D is demand driven and technologies promoted in the field are scientifically sound.
As the first TISS initiative, the Darfur Stoves Project has established a model for change built on robust intellectual capital, innovation, and the passion and commitment of its contributors. DSP maximizes the resources and abilities of established institutions—including a U.S. national energy lab, large international humanitarian organizations, community organizations and local partners, and fiscal sponsors—thereby minimizing overhead and redundant investments. The learning gained through the Darfur Stove Project's work can be directly leveraged in other TISS projects.
